Veil dancing often brings to mind dreamy, floaty movement, but it can also be powerful, fierce, and unapologetically bold. In this workshop, Kaeshi Chai flips the script on traditional veil work, sharing unconventional techniques and dynamic approaches that unleash your inner badass. Get ready to crack the whip, and explore the darker, more commanding side of veil dance.

Beyond technique, this workshop dives into storytelling through movement. You’ll gain theatrical tools to craft clear narratives, deepen emotional expression, and connect more powerfully with your audience, so your veil becomes not just an accessory, but a force that amplifies your presence and your story.

Learn to Recognize and Play Belly Dance Rhythms with your host, percussionist Casey Bond and her special musical guest, Scott Wilson! 

Part 1: Our workshop will begin with some fun Rhythm Recognition exercises for everyone at every level of percussion experience. Dancers may opt to play darbuka, frame drum riqq or finger cymbals for this workshop, or they may choose to attend as observers to enhance their musicality. Beginner and intermediate drummers are all welcome- bring a doumbek, bass doumbek, riqq or frame drum. We will explore these iconic songs, highlighting rhythm changes, transitions and "breaks." There will be opportunities for all to shine as part of the ensemble! 

Part 2: Once we've reviewed the basic rhythms for each song, we'll be ready to play along with live music by Scott Wilson & Efendi! This is your chance to play along, or get up and dance (with or without zills!)  Everyone will be given a folder with rhythm notation and song "cheat sheets" to use at the workshop and beyond. If you can bring an extra doumbek or bass doumbek, you will be showered with praise!  Hope you're looking forward to sharing the joy of performing with a live band in a very safe workshop setting!
